My baby has nappy rash can you give me some skin care advice?.
A
The best course of action is to try
and reduce the amount of time your babies skin is exposed to the irritants that
cause the rash. These are of course urine and faeces. These waste products when
left on the skin can turn to ammonia which burns the skin. Friction from the
constant rubbing of nappies and clothes can also damage the delicate skin.
- Try to leave nappies off for as
long as possible, to let the air get to the skin
- Chose disposable nappies with
the greatest absorbency, gel matrix nappies have been shown to keep baby dry.
- Bathe your baby once a day only,
too many baths will dry your baby’s skin out and removes the protective
sebum.
- When you take your baby out of
the bath pat the nappy area dry gently, rubbing too hard can damage the delicate
skin and expose the skin to potential infection.
- Try to clean and change your
baby frequently or as soon as possible after you notice they are wet to prevent
urine altering the pH of the skin
- When you have removed your babies
nappy, use water, or fragrance-free and alcohol-free baby wipes as these are
both soft and contain non irritants
- Avoid soaps, cleansing washes
and bubble bath as these remove the protective sebum from the skin
- If your baby has no other associated
infection such as thrush use a barrier preparation to apply at each nappy
change, to protect the skin such as Zinc ointment
