My newborn baby has a rash what should I do?.

A

Often babies can get a heat rash. This is characterized by the formation of small raised red bumps on the skin. Mostly these are in the places where your baby tends to sweat most, so you may see it more around the nappy area, under the arms and chest, or around the neck. If you suspect your baby has a sweat rash the solution will be to cool your baby down, so remove clothing and let the air circulate around his/her body. However, it is very important to make sure your babies rash is a heat rash and not due to her being poorly. If you suspect your baby may be poorly see your GP urgently. These few hints may help you identify if your baby may be poorly:

  • Take your babies temperature; a normal temperature should be from 36.5-37 degrees. If your baby has a temperature over 38 degrees see your GP as urgent.
  • Has your baby been off his or her feeds?
  • Is he/she crying more than usual, or is inconsolable and/or has the cry changed to one that is high pitched, or moaning?
  • Does he or she appear to be drowsy?
  • Check your babies soft spot on her head does it feel sunken or raised?
  • Look at his/her colour are they pale or flushed are their lips pale or bluish?

If you suspect you baby to be unwell seek the advice of your GP as your first course of action.
