Having a baby is a very emotional experience and the majority of women have times of feeling low and/or tearful in the early days following the birth, often referred to as the 'baby blues'. Baby blues are quite normal and do not require any treatment.

The baby blues however have usually passed by the time the baby is around ten days old. As you daughter still seems depressed now the baby is a month old it is probably the time to chat to her about your concerns. I would suggest encouraging her also to talk to her GP or health visitor about her feelings.

Your daughter may be suffering from postnatal depression (PND). By talking to her GP or health visitor they will be able to determine if this is the case and if so offer her appropriate treatment. If she does have PND seeking professional help early will give her the opportunity of accessing extra support, greatly speeding up her recovery time.

For detailed information on postnatal depression including signs, causes and how families and friends can help I would recommend 'Mind's' website at the following link:

I do hope you find this information helpful and that your daughter is soon feeling better.
