What does it mean today to be a grandparent - I'm out of touch and it's my first time?

I think the term 'grandparent' means different things to different people and their families. Nowadays, many grandparents live a long way away from their grandchildren so it is not possible to be as involved in their day to day lives as they may wish. Other grandparents who live near to their grandchildren may see them on a more regular basis. It is becoming more and more common for a grandparent to be their grandchild/ren's carer whilst their parents are out at work.

No matter how near or far you live, you can generally look forward to a special relationship with your grandchild. Most children value and look forward to spending time with their grandparents, and this is rewarding for all.

If you live some distance away from your grandchild, regular visits and perhaps letters and/or phone calls can help encourage a close bond you. If you do live close by, it may be easier to visit frequently and perhaps share in more of their daily routine. This usually results in the development of a close relationship.

Many grandparents are concerned about being seen as 'interfering' by their sons/daughters, or even not interested 'enough' in their grandchildren. The best thing to do is chat to your son/daughter about how they envisage their child's relationship with you, and also what you yourself would like. In this way, hopefully you will be able to enjoy the new stage in your relationship with your son/daughter as well as with your grandchild.
