Mentoring
is widely seen as an integral role of the Health Visitor
and the oxford dictionary defines the word mentor as
‘a trusted counselor or guide’. However,
the Department of Health’s and the English National
Board’s definition, denotes the mentor role to
be that of a facilitator of learning, a supervisor and
an assessor of students in the practice area. There
is now a growing body of evidence to suggest that all
practitioners require constant support in their teaching
role, in order for them to internalise and make sense
of their teaching experience and to become an effective
educator.
Practice
portfolios are educational tools to support students
in their practice. The portfolio provides students with
evidence to demonstrate their learning and the successful
integration of theory to practice. However, many mentors
feel that these portfolios are constant sources of stress!
Many find them complex documents as providing evidence
of leaning is sometimes a difficult task.
Here are a couple of documents that you can print to
make your lives a lot easier and to support you in your
mentoring role. Here is a student
activity planner and a reflection
on practice record sheet that can both be placed
in the portfolio.
